Creating timeless collections of functional objects in collaboration with artisans in Morocco, India, Kenya, and Turkey. They spend many hours in the company of there partners quietly observing them at work and are in awe of their skills. Developing a deep understanding of the techniques and processes of each craft is fundamental to the design process.
As a bridge, they connect traditional crafts communities with audiences who are looking for authentic, sustainably produced goods. Working with artists and craftspeople has occupied most of my life, a journey that has taken me around the world and led to many adventures. Despite spending so much of my life among artisans, I continue to learn every day. Despite many challenges in this line of work, I feel privileged to be able to spend time with locals in their homes and studios, and to live and work with them as well.
They have traveled the globe for the past 25 years listening to stories and sharing meals with people I encountered, some of whom have become my closest friends. It astonishes me to see how simple objects can be so beautifully crafted with basic tools and natural materials sourced locally. Hand and eye become one with the tools and materials as they repeat a series of motions; stitching, weaving, plaiting, forging. My greatest guide and most humbling joy continues to be the patience and kindness I experience while working with the artisans.
